FOOD INSECURITY

The concept of Food Insecurity was developed by the USDA and the US Census Bureau to better define the level of availability of nutritious food to sustain an active an healthy life. Food Insecurity is defined as “the limited or uncertain availability or ability to acquire safe, nutritious food in a socially acceptable way.”  Food insecurity combined with hunger produces an uneasy, painful sensation caused by an involuntary lack of food.

Food insecurity increased from 60.1% in 2005, to 84.5% in 2009 amongst those seeking food pantry assistance in Los Angeles County.  Government food assistance programs such as WIC and school meal assistance have also seen dramatic increases in enrollment.
